Daily life in the Indus Valley site of Rakhigarhi during c. 2500 BCE
A grounded look at household routines, farming, craft production, and community life in a major city of the mature Harappan world.
Around 2500 BCE, Rakhigarhi was a large urban settlement on the plains of present-day Haryana in northern India. It belonged to the Mature Harappan, or urban Indus, period, conventionally dated to about 2600/2500–1900 BCE; pottery sampled from Rakhigarhi has been assigned more narrowly to its early and middle part, about 2600/2500–2200 BCE. The date in this page title is therefore an approximate point within a long archaeological phase, not a single-year picture. Communities across the wider Indus sphere shared conventions in weights, seals, script signs, pottery, and construction, but they also maintained regional practices. Excavation at Rakhigarhi has revealed several mounds with streets, drains, mud-brick and fired-brick structures, craft areas, and a cemetery.[1][6]
No surviving text describes a day in Rakhigarhi, and the Indus script remains undeciphered. Daily life must therefore be reconstructed from buildings, food remains, pottery, tools, ornaments, and graves. These finds show a city sustained by households and nearby farming settlements. Like Mohenjo-daro, Rakhigarhi joined planned infrastructure to the repeated work of carrying water, preparing grain, tending animals, shaping raw materials, and keeping houses and drains in repair.
Housing and Living Spaces
In the excavated parts of RGR-1 and RGR-2, mud-brick and fired-brick structures stood beside streets and lanes. Public drains followed the natural slope, and smaller house drains joined them; excavators also recorded courtyard surfaces and wells. These remains make movement and wastewater management visible, but the cuttings expose only parts of a city that was repeatedly rebuilt. It is safer to describe rooms and open areas as settings for overlapping domestic and craft tasks than to label every space a kitchen, bathroom, shop, or bedroom. Fired brick was particularly useful on wet or heavily worn surfaces, while mud brick supplied most of the mass of walls and platforms.[1]
Household space had to support many activities. Ceramic jars held water and dry goods, bowls and dishes served food, and grinding equipment turned crops into usable ingredients. Baskets, wooden fittings, reed mats, and textiles rarely survive, but they probably made rooms more adaptable. A floor used for craftwork or food preparation during daylight could be cleared for eating or sleeping. Roofs and shaded courtyards may also have provided seasonal work areas during hot weather. Keeping such spaces usable would have required sweeping floors, clearing hearth ash, repairing walls and roofs, and protecting stored supplies from moisture, insects, and rodents.
Drainage made private routines part of a neighborhood system. Water used for washing or craftwork had to pass from a house into a lane without undermining walls or leaving standing pools, so drains required clearing and damaged surfaces needed repair. Wells and storage vessels made water collection a recurring household or neighborhood task, but the city's larger water supply is not securely reconstructed. Rakhigarhi lies at least 50 kilometres from the well-known Ghaggar–Hakra palaeochannel. Its proposed relationship to another abandoned channel, often called the Drishadvati, still requires securely dated local geological evidence. It should not therefore be pictured beside an established perennial river: residents managed water in a seasonally wet, semi-arid alluvial landscape whose ancient channels remain under study.[1][7]
The city accumulated through repair and rebuilding. As floors rose and walls changed, residents adapted inherited structures to new occupants and uses. Home was thus not simply a fixed plan: it was a maintained set of rooms, containers, work surfaces, and shared connections to the street.
Food and Daily Meals
Rakhigarhi depended on cultivation and herding in its hinterland, but the precise balance of foods delivered to the city remains under study. The excavation report records wheat and barley in Mature Harappan levels and possible rice-husk impressions in an earlier building material that were still under examination. At the well-dated settlements of Masudpur I and VII, about 12–15 kilometres away, archaeobotanical research found winter crops alongside rice, millets, and tropical pulses, demonstrating mixed-season cultivation in the region from early phases. These village finds do not prove that every crop reached Rakhigarhi or that the city controlled its rural neighbors. Researchers still identify the contents and organization of Rakhigarhi's urban food supply as open questions.[1][3][5]
Grain reached the table only after repeated labor. Querns and rubbers attest pounding or grinding, while hearths and cooking vessels show that ingredients were heated; they do not preserve a standard recipe. Rakhigarhi's red pottery included jars, bowls, dishes, beakers, perforated vessels, and cooking pots, giving households containers for storage, preparation, serving, and pouring. Some local pottery belonged to a regionally distinctive tradition often called Haryana Harappan ware, even where its forms overlapped with the better-known “Classic Harappan” repertoire. Hearths needed dung, crop waste, or wood as fuel. Water had to be carried and vessels cleaned, while dry foods required protection from damp and pests.[6]
Cattle, water buffalo, sheep, goats, and pigs appear in Rakhigarhi's faunal record, but bones cannot by themselves show whether an animal supplied traction, dung, milk, hides, or meat, much less how access varied between households. A study of 30 pottery sherds from early and middle Mature Harappan Rakhigarhi found appreciable absorbed lipids in 18. The results were often ambiguous between animal fats, plant products, and mixtures; only one Rakhigarhi jar produced a value securely within the study's dairy range. This is direct evidence that some dairy processing occurred, not that dairy was abundant or available to everyone. The same analysis found a particularly wide range of residue values at the city, which could reflect products or animals arriving from different places or seasons, although that interpretation remains provisional.[6]
Meals likely varied with household resources and season. Bowls and dishes show serving as well as preparation, but they do not reveal household composition or dining etiquette. The labor behind food nevertheless connected urban residents to farmers, herders, potters, fuel gatherers, and transporters beyond the household.
Work and Labor
Most work in Rakhigarhi belonged to connected household and neighborhood economies. Families cooked, cleaned, fetched water, cared for children, spun fiber, repaired belongings, and managed stores alongside any specialized occupation. Beyond the urban mounds, farmers prepared fields, sowed crops in different seasons, harvested by hand, threshed grain, and moved part of the yield into the city. Herders guided cattle, buffalo, sheep, and goats between grazing and water, while animal power may have helped with plowing and cart transport.
Excavated objects, tools, and waste reveal a broad craft sector. Potters formed red-ware vessels and controlled firing in kilns; bead workers shaped stone, steatite, shell, terracotta, and copper into small, regular forms. A floor in south-central RGR-2 was identified as a shell-working area, giving firmer evidence of local manufacture than finished bangles alone. The marine shell had travelled hundreds of kilometres from the coast before it was cut and smoothed. Finds of worked bone and ivory, copper objects, and bead-making debris document other skilled sequences, although they do not show whether production was full-time or organized by households, attached workshops, or independent specialists. Each craft joined procurement, preparation, shaping, finishing, repair, and exchange.[1]
Construction and repair required brick molding, masonry, plastering, carrying, and work on drains and streets, although no text preserves the titles or status of those who performed these tasks. Mud had to be mixed and molded; fired bricks demanded substantial fuel and careful kiln management. Silted drains, worn floors, cracked storage jars, and weathered walls created recurring work. Terracotta cart frames and wheels suggest that wheeled vehicles were familiar, while pack animals and human carriers could have moved smaller loads through lanes and across the surrounding plain.
Seals, sealings, script signs, and standardized measures linked craftspeople and producers to systems of distribution. Their precise administration cannot be read, but they indicate habits of marking, counting, and checking goods. Raw materials arriving from distant regions also show that some residents worked within exchange networks extending well beyond Rakhigarhi. A bead or shell bangle embodied many occupations, from extraction and transport to skilled finishing and sale.
Social Structure
Rakhigarhi was organized, but archaeology does not identify named rulers, dynasties, or a single governing institution. Shared brick proportions, street layouts, drainage, pottery conventions, weights, and seals indicate coordination across both the city and the larger Harappan world. That coordination may have involved household heads, merchants, craft leaders, civic managers, or ritual authorities. The evidence does not support assigning it to one known form of government, and the absence of a deciphered written record makes caution essential.
The household was probably the central unit of care, production, consumption, and learning. Children acquired language, custom, and practical skills by participating in daily work. Knowledge of farming, pottery firing, bead drilling, building, and animal care passed through repeated instruction and observation. Larger homes, access to valued materials, and differences in craft equipment suggest that resources were not distributed evenly. Yet urban residents remained interdependent: prosperous households still relied on people who grew food, carried water, built walls, and cleared drains.
Rakhigarhi's separate Mature Harappan cemetery gives another view of community, but it is not a census of the city. Excavations in 2013–16 classified 41 of 53 graves as primary burials; five were secondary, six symbolic, and one an apparently unused chamber. Most primary graves held one person laid on the back in a simple pit, while brick-lined, multiple, and prone burials were uncommon. Pottery and personal ornaments accompanied some of the dead, and atypical graves tended to contain more pots. These differences may reflect identity, family practice, ritual choice, or status, but grave goods and construction cannot be translated into a simple social ranking.[2]
Gender and age must also be treated carefully. Skeletal study can sometimes estimate biological sex and age at death, but objects do not automatically reveal a person's everyday role. Food preparation, textile work, herding, trade, and craft production may have been divided by gender, age, household standing, or skill, yet the exact rules are unknown. Neighborhood life likely involved cooperation over shared lanes, water, drainage, and safety, along with ordinary disagreements. Social position mattered, but so did the practical ability to maintain trust, exchange labor, and meet obligations within a dense settlement.
Tools and Technology
Rakhigarhi's technology was expressed through precision and reliable repetition. Molds helped produce regular bricks; kilns hardened bricks and pottery; and planned drains controlled wastewater. Stone querns and rubbers processed grain, while chert blades cut plant material, food, leather, and fiber. Bone points and copper tools served finer tasks. Because wood, basketry, and cord usually decay, the surviving toolkit represents only the durable portion of what people handled each day.
Craft specialists used additional equipment. Beads were roughed out, ground, polished, and drilled with narrow tools; shell bangles had to be sawn and smoothed without splitting. Potters used prepared clay, forming methods, slips, painted designs, and controlled firing. Spindle whorls kept thread under tension, while looms were probably largely wooden. Carts extended carrying capacity across the plain, and ceramic containers allowed liquids, grain, oil, and small goods to be stored and transported.
Standardized weights and inscribed seals were technologies of organization as much as objects. They made quantities and identities more consistent in exchanges between people who did not share a household. The Indus signs on seals cannot yet be read, so their exact messages remain unknown. Even so, the combination of measurement, durable containers, skilled transport, and recognizable marks helped connect Rakhigarhi's workshops to a broad Harappan material system.
Clothing and Materials
Cloth rarely survives at Rakhigarhi, so clothing cannot be reconstructed like pottery or brickwork. Terracotta spindle whorls demonstrate spinning, but a whorl does not identify the fiber spun or the person doing the work. Cotton fibers and cloth are securely attested elsewhere in the Indus region before and during the Mature Harappan period, making cotton plausible at Rakhigarhi without proving the material of any particular garment. Preparing fiber, spinning thread, and weaving cloth demanded substantial labor, but the surviving evidence does not establish workshop organization or a universal division of textile work by gender.[1][4]
Figurines and rare textile impressions offer clues, but they do not establish one standard costume. Represented drapery may depict ordinary clothing, ceremonial dress, or artistic convention, and it cannot show how garments varied by season, age, occupation, or household resources. Patchwork, alteration, and reuse are sensible possibilities for labor-intensive cloth rather than directly observed Rakhigarhi practices. Dyes may have added color, though the shades and patterns used at the site are not securely known.
Adornment survives more clearly than clothing. Excavations recovered shell and terracotta bangles, beads made from semiprecious stone, steatite, shell, terracotta, and copper, and other small ornaments. Some materials traveled considerable distances before reaching the city. Jewelry could display taste, life stage, affiliation, skill, or access to exchange networks, but a particular bead cannot by itself prove wealth or rank. Everyday appearance combined perishable cloth with durable objects that were maintained, restrung, handed on, or placed with the dead.
Daily life in Rakhigarhi around 2500 BCE rested on coordination without surviving written explanation. Households transformed crops, animal products, clay, stone, shell, metal, and fiber into meals and useful goods, while streets and drains turned private maintenance into a shared concern. The city belonged to a far-reaching Harappan world, yet it endured through local knowledge: when to sow, how to fire a pot, where to clear a drain, and how to sustain relationships between household, workshop, and countryside.
